ALGOP Blasts Dems Over Smitherman Pro Tem Vote
Birmingham, AL – In a move that can only be described as insane, Senate Democrats voted today to elect Rodger Smitherman as the President Pro Tempore of the Alabama State Senate. At a time when Alabama families are struggling and ethics violations among public officials are numerous, Democrats again demonstrated that they care more about back-room deals than they do about deals that will improve our State. Aside from his noted liberal agenda on social issues, Smitherman championed legislation in the last session that the Alabama Retail Association called a “clear and present danger to Alabama’s economy.” Today, Senate Democrats have put Alabama’s already struggling economy in danger, knowing full well the record of Rodger Smitherman, choosing to honor a good ‘ole boy “deal” – Smitherman may have gotten his deal, but the people of Alabama got dealt a big liberal blow.
Philip Bryan, ALGOP Communications Director issued the following statement:
“Today, Democrats had an opportunity to choose the people of Alabama over some backroom deal, but they chose to look out for special interests instead of the taxpayer’s best interests. It is absolutely ludicrous that these arrogant Democrats feel that they can slap the people with a Pro Tem that is pro-abortion, anti-business, supports regulation of ammunition and guns, anti-death penalty and a defender of double-dipping, one of the biggest ethical issues our State faces today – given Smitherman’s record, it seems that criminals, Paul Hubbert, champions of higher taxes and governmental waste enthusiasts are the only ones that came out victorious today.”
