Alabama Republican Party Launches ‘136 Years is Long Enough’ PR Campaign

Montgomery – Rep. Mike Hubbard (R-Auburn), Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, officially kicked off the Party’s “136 Years is Long Enough” initiative to raise voter awareness that Alabama isn’t completely a red state…yet. While Republicans have worked to bring responsible and conservative leadership to a large majority of state and federal offices, the Alabama Legislature has been controlled by Democrats since 1874. The “136 Year” effort is designed as another component ofCampaign 2010, and will focus on raising voter awareness that Democrats, and their special interest group bedfellows, have controlled Alabama for far too long.

The Alabama Republican Party launched Campaign 2010 in 2007 as an aggressive fundraising effort, accompanied by a strategic plan, to take over the Alabama Legislature for the first time since 1874. The plan has successfully been executed in three special elections over the past year, resulting in Republicans picking up three Democrat seats in the Legislature. Those three wins have Republicans within eight of having a majority in the House and only three seats from a majority in the Alabama Senate.

To highlight the “136 Years is Long Enough” campaign, the Party released a new website which features a companion video: www.136years.com.

During the press conference, Chairman Hubbard emphasized how important it is for voters to recognize that progress is only possible if we clean up culture of corruption in the Legislature – a culture fostered by Democrats for over 136 years.

“Launching this creative, and informative, campaign to raise voter awareness on just how long Democrats have held Alabama back is a critical component of our 2010 campaign initiative,” Hubbard said. “Most Alabamians are shocked to learn that Democrats have controlled Alabama since Hawaii still had a King!”

“The Democrat Party has controlled the Legislature so long, they have lost touch with the people who matter most – the Alabama citizens and taxpayers,” Hubbard added. “All you have to do is just look at the 62% pay raise they voted themselves, with taxpayer money, to understand that after 136 years, Democrats believe they own Alabama.”

“We are simply educating voters to the facts and when you look at the results of the three Democrat legislative seats the Alabama GOP picked up this past year, the people clearly agree with us - 136 years is long enough.”
