Democrat Senator Wendell Mitchell Fights to Keep Status Quo in Montgomery
Birmingham — Longtime Democrat Senator Wendell Mitchell (D-Luverne) has made it clear that he believes his status as a political insider is reason enough for voters to re-elect him in November. Mitchell, who is approaching his 30th year in the Alabama Senate, faces Republican Bryan Taylor, an Iraq veteran who most recently served as Policy Director for Governor Bob Riley.
In a recent Troy Messenger article, Mitchell made the case that the Senate doesn’t need too many new faces:
“With about 25 percent of the Senate turning over, it makes experience all the more important. There may be others who don’t return and you certainly need a community of veterans,” Mitchell said. “The candidate I oppose has no experience in public office.” (Troy Messenger, 6/8/2010, article HERE)
In response to Mitchell’s comment that the Senate must retain some “veterans,” read: political insiders, Rep. Mike Hubbard (R-Auburn), Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, issued the following statement:
“What Senator Mitchell is saying is that the special interest groups and political insiders won’t be able to feed at the public trough any longer if new, reform-minded, candidates like Bryan Taylor are elected,” Hubbard stated. “The ‘community of veterans’ of which Mitchell refers is typical political spin, but what that really means is that he believes that the Alabama Senate has run just fine with him and his political cronies in charge.”
“Alabamians deserve better than the Democrat status quo that Senator Mitchell hopes to preserve in Montgomery,” Hubbard added. “They deserve honest, conservative leadership that will stand up to special interest groups and will fight for the people’s interests. Republican Bryan Taylor, who unlike Mitchell actually lives in the district, is the candidate for the people of Senate District 30, while Democrat Wendell Mitchell is the candidate for the status quo.”
