Bright Silent on Rangel Amid Growing Calls for his Resignation
Birmingham, AL – Former donor to Alabama Democrat Congressman Bobby Bright (D-AL), Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.), has been charged with 13 violations of House rules and federal law. Several of Rangel’s Democrat colleagues have conceded that his penchant for unethical behavior has left his political career with only one path – resignation.
However, Democrat Bobby Bright – who twice voted to keep Rangel as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee even amidst the allegations of unethical conduct – has not joined the chorus to demand that Rangel step down. Leaving questions of whether Rangel’s generous donation to Bright in 2008 came with an agreement of silence, or whether Bright simply doesn’t feel that breaking the law should constitute resignation from the House of Representatives.
Rep. Mike Hubbard (R-Auburn), Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party issued the following statement on Bright’s silence in the wake of the charges against Rangel:
“It is astounding that Democrat Bobby Bright would choose to condone Rangel’s actions through his silence. The charges against Charlie Rangel are serious abuses of government and warrant a harsh rebuke from every member of his Party.
“If Bobby Bright doesn’t care enough about protecting the taxpayers of Alabama from unethical politicians like Charlie Rangel, then he isn’t fit to be a Congressman. The Alabama Republican Party calls on Bobby Bright to explain his silence on the matter, and let the voters know exactly why he hasn’t called on Charlie Rangel to resign.
“We have seen time and time again in Alabama when the Democrat Party simply looks the other way when taxpayers get cheated and politicians get caught. It’s time that Bobby Bright take a position on at least one thing and demand that Rangel admit to his ethical transgressions and remove himself from Congress immediately.”
